Caustic Soda Introduction

Caustic soda, whose chemical name is sodium hydroxide (NaOH), is a strong base widely used in chemical, textile, papermaking, food processing and other fields.

Basic properties:

  • Appearance: White solid, commonly in the form of flakes, granules or blocks.
  • Solubility: Easily soluble in water, releases heat when dissolved, and the aqueous solution is strongly alkaline.
  • Hygroscopicity: Easily absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide in the air and needs to be sealed for storage.
  • Corrosiveness: Highly corrosive to skin, eyes and mucous membranes.

Main Application:

  1. Chemical industry:
Used in the production of soaps, detergents, synthetic detergents, etc.
As a neutralizer, catalyst or reactant, used in organic and inorganic synthesis.
  2. Textile industry:
Used in mercerization of cotton fabrics to improve fiber strength and gloss.
  3. Papermaking industry:
Used in alkali treatment during pulping to remove lignin and other impurities.
  4. Food industry:
As an acidity regulator and cleaning agent, used in food processing and equipment cleaning.
  5. Water treatment:
Used to adjust the pH value of water and neutralize acidic wastewater.
  6. Laboratory:
Common reagents for preparing solutions and chemical analysis.

Preparation method:

  1. Electrolysis method (main industrial method):
It is produced by electrolysis of saturated salt water (NaCl solution), and the reaction is as follows:
    2NaCl+2H2O→electrolysis 2NaOH+H2↑+Cl2↑2NaCl+2H2Oelectrolysis2NaOH+H2↑+Cl2↑
This method can produce chlorine and hydrogen at the same time.
  2. Lime-soda method:
It is produced by the reaction of sodium carbonate and calcium hydroxide, and the reaction is as follows:
    Na2CO3+Ca(OH)2→2NaOH+CaCO3↓Na2CO3+Ca(OH)2→2NaOH+CaCO3↓
This method is relatively expensive and has been gradually replaced by electrolysis.

Safety precautions:

  • Corrosiveness: Sodium hydroxide is highly corrosive to the skin, eyes and mucous membranes. Protective gloves, goggles and protective clothing should be worn during operation.
  • Heat of Dissolution: Heat is released during dissolution. Add to water slowly and stir to avoid splashing.
  • Storage: Store in a sealed dry place to avoid contact with acids, organic matter and flammable materials.

Summary:

Caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) is an important chemical raw material, which is widely used in many industrial fields. When using it, you need to pay attention to its strong corrosiveness and heat of solution, and strictly abide by the safety operation specifications.
