What Does TDI 80/20 Mean?

In TDI 80/20, the numbers describe the nominal ratio of two toluene diisocyanate isomers: 2,4-TDI and 2,6-TDI. They do not mean that the product has a purity of 80%. Understanding this distinction helps buyers request the correct grade and compare product documentation.

Isomer Composition and Purity Are Different

Isomers have the same molecular formula but differ in the positions of groups within the molecule. For TDI, the 2,4 and 2,6 names identify the positions of the two isocyanate groups relative to the methyl group on the aromatic ring.

The 80/20 grade designation identifies the nominal isomer composition. Purity is a separate specification. Use the current manufacturer TDS and the applicable batch documentation to confirm the actual specification limits for the product being purchased.

Common Ways the Grade Is Written

The product may be described as TDI 80/20, TDI-80 or toluene diisocyanate 80/20. Confirm the manufacturer and full product designation when requesting a quotation, because a shortened name is not a substitute for the specification.

Is TDI 80/20 the Same as TDI 65 or TDI 100?

No. These grade names refer to products with different isomer compositions. They are not synonyms, and the numbers should not be read as universal purity percentages. Select the grade required for the formulation and review its current documentation.

How Is TDI 80/20 Used?

TDI 80/20 is used in flexible polyurethane foam production, including foam for mattresses and furniture cushioning. Its suitability for a particular system depends on the complete formulation and production process. See our TDI guide for flexible polyurethane foam for application enquiry questions.

What Should a Buyer Confirm?

  • The manufacturer, complete grade name and current TDS.
  • The specified isomer composition, purity and other required technical characteristics.
  • The required batch documentation and current SDS.
  • The intended foam application and the evaluation criteria for any proposed grade change.
  • The requested quantity, destination, packaging and commercial terms.
