Sodium carbonate introduction

Soda ash, whose chemical name is sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃), is an important inorganic compound that is widely used in chemical, glass, detergent, papermaking and other industries.

Basic properties:

  • Appearance: white powder or granules, easily soluble in water, the aqueous solution is alkaline.
  • Solubility: easily soluble in water, insoluble in ethanol.
  • Hygroscopicity: easy to absorb moisture and agglomerate in the air.
  • Alkalinity: The aqueous solution is moderately alkaline, with a pH value of about 11-12.

Main Application:

  1. Glass industry:
As one of the main raw materials, it is used to make flat glass, bottle glass, etc.
  2. Chemical industry:
It is used to produce detergents, soaps, synthetic detergents, etc.
As a neutralizer, buffer or reactant, it is used in organic and inorganic synthesis.
  3. Paper industry:
It is used for alkali treatment in the pulping process to remove lignin and other impurities.
  4. Water treatment:
It is used to adjust the pH value of water and soften hard water.
  5. Food industry:
It is used as an acidity regulator and leavening agent in food processing.
  6. Laboratory:
It is a common reagent used for preparing solutions and chemical analysis.

Preparation method:

  1. Solvay process (ammonia-soda process):
It is produced by the reaction of sodium chloride, ammonia and carbon dioxide. The reaction is as follows:
    NaCl+NH3+CO2+H2O→NaHCO3+NH4ClNaCl+NH3+CO2+H2O→NaHCO3+NH4Cl2NaHCO3→Na2CO3+CO2↑+H2O=2NaHCO3, heating, Na2CO3+CO2↑+H2O
This method is low-cost and the raw materials are easily available. It is the main industrial method.
  2. Hou's alkali method:
It is made by reacting sodium chloride, ammonia and carbon dioxide, and ammonium chloride is recovered at the same time. The reaction is as follows:
    NaCl+NH3+CO2+H2O→NaHCO3+NH4ClNaCl+NH3+CO2+H2O→NaHCO3+NH4Cl2NaHCO3→heatingNa2CO3+CO2↑+H2O2NaHCO3heatingNa2CO3+CO2↑+H2O
This method has high raw material utilization rate and low environmental pollution.
  3. Natural alkali ore method:
Sodium carbonate is extracted from natural alkali ore, and soda ash is obtained after refining.

Safety precautions:

  • Corrosiveness: Sodium carbonate is irritating to the skin and eyes. Protective gloves and goggles should be worn during operation.
  • Inhalation: Dust may irritate the respiratory tract. Operation should be carried out in a well-ventilated area.
  • Storage: It should be sealed and stored in a dry place to avoid moisture absorption and agglomeration.

Summary:

Soda ash (sodium carbonate) is an important chemical raw material, which is widely used in glass, chemical industry, papermaking and other fields. When using it, you need to pay attention to its alkalinity and corrosiveness, and strictly abide by the safety operation specifications.
