Polymeric MDI is a key isocyanate raw material for rigid polyurethane foam insulation. Applications include building panels, refrigerator insulation and spray foam. The appropriate grade depends on the formulation and production process. When requesting a recommendation, provide the application, processing method and relevant formulation requirements so that product specifications can be reviewed against your needs.
Polymeric MDI and a Complete Rigid Foam System
Polymeric MDI is the isocyanate raw material in the formulation. A rigid polyurethane foam system involves other formulation components as well. When making an enquiry, specify whether you require the isocyanate, a formulated polyol blend or a complete matched system, so that the requested supply scope is clear.
Describe the Insulation Application
| Application | Useful Information for Grade Selection |
|---|---|
| Building and sandwich panels | Panel type, facing materials, production method and required finished-panel properties. |
| Refrigerator and appliance insulation | Part or cavity description, filling process, existing system and required finished-foam properties. |
| Spray foam insulation | Intended insulation use, equipment and system type, and the standards or approvals the finished system must meet. |
| Other insulation components | End use, component geometry, processing method and the specification that will be used to assess the finished product. |
These are application enquiry topics. Suitability must be reviewed for the selected grade and complete system; the application name alone does not establish suitability.
Distinguish Rigid PU and PIR Requirements
Rigid polyurethane (PU) foam and polyisocyanurate (PIR) foam should be identified separately in a technical enquiry. Both can use appropriate polymeric MDI grades, but their formulations and processing requirements differ. A product description mentioning rigid PU foam is not sufficient evidence that the same grade is approved for a particular PIR system.
Tell us which system you are evaluating and which finished-product requirements apply. Any required fire classification, thermal performance or certification must be checked for the relevant finished system or product; it should not be assumed from the raw material name.
Compare Technical Documents Before Comparing Price
- Confirm the manufacturer, exact grade and revision date of the TDS.
- Compare NCO content, viscosity and other specified characteristics using the stated units and test conditions.
- Identify which figures are typical values and which are specification limits.
- Review the SDS and the manufacturer storage and handling requirements for the product supplied.
- Ask what batch documentation is available, including a certificate of analysis (COA) where required.
Raw material specifications support selection, but finished-foam performance also depends on the complete formulation and production process. A change of supplier or grade should follow the evaluation and approval requirements for your production system.
Prepare an Enquiry for Your Project
Include the application, current grade if applicable, process or equipment type, target foam properties, relevant standards, requested quantity and delivery destination. If you are comparing alternatives, identify the properties and evaluation criteria that must be retained rather than asking for an unspecified equivalent.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can one polymeric MDI grade be used in every insulation application?
No universal suitability should be assumed. Check the individual grade documentation and its compatibility with the intended formulation and process.
Does a raw material grade guarantee the insulation performance of the finished foam?
No. Assess thermal, mechanical and other required properties on the relevant finished foam or system using the agreed evaluation criteria.
Where can I review product information?
Browse our polymeric MDI grades, review Wannate PM-200 specifications or visit the broader MDI catalog. Confirm the current technical documents and order-specific details during your enquiry.
