Application of Phosphorus Flame Retardant TCPP

Application of Phosphorus Flame Retardant TCPP

TCPP (Tris(chloropropyl) phosphate) is a widely used additive organic phosphorus flame retardant with excellent flame retardant properties and relatively low toxicity (compared to TCEP). The following are its key application areas and characteristics:

  1. Polyurethane foam (PU Foam)
    (1)Application scenarios:
Furniture industry: sofas, mattresses, seat filling foam.
Building insulation materials: spray foam, insulation boards.
Automotive industry: car seats, ceilings, sound insulation materials.
    Advantages:
Good compatibility with polyether/polyester polyols, no effect on the physical properties of foam.
Complies with UL94 HF-1 (soft foam flame retardant standard) and FMVSS 302 (automotive interior fire protection standard).

(2) Engineering plastics
Applicable plastic types:
PVC (hard/soft): cable sheath, floor covering, wallpaper.
ABS, HIPS: electronic and electrical housing (such as TVs, printers).
Epoxy resin: PCB substrate, packaging material.
Advantages:
Easy to add in liquid form, does not affect processing fluidity.
Used in conjunction with plasticizers (such as DOP) to enhance flame retardancy.

(3) Adhesives and coatings
Applications:
Fire retardant coatings (steel structures, ship bulkheads).
Flame retardant adhesives (composite panels, automotive interior bonding).
Features:
Improve the ability of coatings to form carbonized layers and reduce smoke release.

(4) Textile finishing
Processing methods: impregnation or coating processes.
Applicable fabrics:
Curtains, tents, protective clothing (must comply with EN ISO 11612 fire protection standards).
Automotive interior fabrics (carpets, door panel linings).

2.TCPP works through a dual mechanism of gas phase + condensed phase:
Gas phase flame retardant:
Decomposes under heat to generate PO· free radicals, capturing H·/OH· free radicals in the combustion chain reaction.
Releases HCl gas to dilute oxygen concentration.
Condensed phase flame retardant:
Promotes carbonization on the polymer surface to isolate heat and oxygen.

3. TCPP的优缺点

Advantages Disadvantages
✅ High flame retardant efficiency (phosphorus-chlorine synergy) ❌ Still contains chlorine, combustion may produce dioxins
✅ Liquid is easy to add and easy to process ❌Long-term exposure may cause irritation to the skin/respiratory tract
✅ Moderate price, high cost performance ❌ EU REACH regulations restrict some uses (need to be evaluated)
  1. Environmental protection and regulatory status
    EU:
Not included in SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern), but must comply with RoHS and REACH assessments.
Some manufacturers turn to halogen-free alternatives (such as DMMP, DOPO derivatives).
    USA:
Complies with TSCA requirements and is allowed to be used in furniture and building materials.
    China:
GB/T 26572-2011 does not clearly limit, but the trend of green products promotes substitution.
    Common alternatives
If a more environmentally friendly flame retardant is needed, consider:
Halogen-free phosphorus system: dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP), ammonium polyphosphate (APP).
Phosphorus-nitrogen system: intumescent flame retardant (APP/PER/MEL compound).
Reactive flame retardant: DOPO derivative (for epoxy resin).
  2. Usage recommendations:
Additional amount: usually 5%~20% (depending on the flame retardant grade requirements of the material).
Compounding recommendations: Use in conjunction with melamine (gas source) or aluminum hydroxide (smoke suppressant).
Safe operation: Avoid direct contact and store in a ventilated environment.

Summary:
TCPP is still the mainstream flame retardant for polyurethane and engineering plastics due to its high efficiency, easy processing and low cost. However, in the context of stricter environmental regulations, attention should be paid to the development of alternative technologies.
