Sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) is an important multifunctional chemical in the water treatment industry. It is widely used in industrial circulating water, boiler water, sewage treatment and other fields mainly by virtue of its chelating, dispersing, corrosion inhibition and scale inhibition properties. The following are its specific applications and mechanisms of action:
- Antiscalant (anti-scaling agent):
- Principle of action: SHMP can form stable soluble complexes with metal ions such as calcium (Ca²⁺), magnesium (Mg²⁺), iron (Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺) in water, preventing these ions from combining with carbonate and sulfate to form insoluble scale (such as CaCO₃, CaSO₄).
- Application scenarios:
- Circulating cooling water system: prevent scaling on the surface of pipes and heat exchangers and improve heat exchange efficiency.
- Boiler water treatment: reduce scale deposition on the inner wall of the boiler to avoid energy waste and safety hazards.
- Corrosion Inhibitor:
- Principle of action: SHMP forms a protective film (phosphate film) on the metal surface, isolating the metal from the erosion of dissolved oxygen and corrosive ions (such as Cl⁻) in the water, and slowing down the corrosion rate of materials such as steel and copper.
- Applicable conditions: Often used in combination with other corrosion inhibitors (such as zinc salts, organic phosphonates) to enhance the synergistic effect.
- Dispersants:
- Principle of action: SHMP adsorbs on the surface of suspended particles or colloids, giving them negative charges, causing the particles to repel each other and avoid agglomeration and deposition.
- Application scenarios:
- Sewage treatment: Prevent the sedimentation of suspended matter in sludge and improve the filtering effect.
- Reverse Osmosis (RO) System: Delays fouling on the membrane surface and extends membrane life.
- Water Softener:
- How it works: By chelating Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ ions in hard water, it reduces the hardness of water and avoids soap scum formation or equipment scaling.
- Application scenarios:
- Industrial soft water pretreatment: such as textile, printing and dyeing, papermaking and other industries that require soft water.
- Civilian soft water: may be used in some old small water softening equipment (now mostly replaced by more environmentally friendly ion exchange resins).
- Other accessibility features:
- Stabilize water pH: SHMP is weakly alkaline and can buffer water pH fluctuations.
- Inhibit algae growth: By chelating essential metal ions (such as iron) for algae, it indirectly inhibits their reproduction.
Notes and limitations:
- Concentration control:
- Excessive use may lead to phosphate residues and promote eutrophication of water bodies.
- The generally recommended dosage concentration is 5~20 mg/L (adjusted according to water quality).
- Temperature limitation: SHMP is easily hydrolyzed into orthophosphate (PO₄³⁻) in high temperature (>80℃) or acidic (pH<6) environment, which reduces efficiency and may aggravate corrosion.
- Environmentally friendly alternative: In modern water treatment, SHMP is gradually replaced by more stable organic phosphonates (such as HEDP, ATMP) or green polymer scale inhibitors.
Typical compounding scheme:
- SHMP + zinc salt: Enhances corrosion inhibition.
- SHMP + polyacrylic acid (PAA): Improves dispersed scale inhibition performance.
