How to use flame retardant TEP

TEP (triethyl phosphate) is a commonly used flame retardant and plasticizer, widely used in resins, coatings, plastics and cellulose materials. The following are the usage and precautions of TEP:

Instructions for use:

  1. Addition ratio:
The addition amount of TEP is usually 5%-20% of the total weight of the material, and the specific ratio depends on the flame retardant requirements of the material and the application scenario.
For example, in cellulose materials (such as paper and textiles), the addition amount of TEP is generally 10%-15%.
  2. Even mixing:
During the production process, TEP is fully mixed with other raw materials to ensure uniform distribution.
A blender, high-speed mixer or other mixing equipment can be used.
  3. Processing temperature:
The decomposition temperature of TEP is relatively high (about 200°C or more), but the temperature still needs to be controlled during the processing to avoid decomposition or failure caused by excessive temperature.
It is recommended that the processing temperature be controlled below 180°C.
  4. Application areas:
Resins and coatings: TEP is commonly used for flame retardancy and plasticization of epoxy resins, polyurethane resins and coatings.
Plastics: It can be used for flame retardancy of plastics such as PVC, PP, PE.
Cellulose materials: Added to paper and textiles to improve their flame retardant properties.

Precautions:

  1. Safety protection:
TEP is slightly irritating to the skin and eyes. Protective gloves, masks and goggles should be worn when using it.
Avoid direct contact with the skin and inhalation of vapor.
  2. Storage conditions:
TEP should be stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, away from fire and high temperature.
    Avoid contact with strong oxidants.
  3. Environmental impact:
TEP has little impact on the environment, but it still needs to be handled in accordance with chemical handling specifications to avoid polluting the environment.
  4. Compatibility test:
Before using TEP, it is recommended to conduct a small-scale test to ensure its compatibility with the substrate and flame retardant effect.
  5. Regulatory compliance:
Different countries and regions have different regulatory requirements for the use of TEP. You should understand and comply with relevant regulations before use.

Example Formulation (Epoxy Flame Retardant Coating):

  • Raw materials:
    Epoxy resin: 100 parts
    Curing agent: 30 parts
    TEP: 10-15 parts
Filler (such as aluminum hydroxide): 20 parts
Solvent (such as acetone): appropriate amount
  • Steps:
Mix epoxy resin and TEP evenly.
    Add filler and continue stirring.
Add curing agent and stir evenly.
Add solvent as needed to adjust the viscosity of the coating.
Apply to the substrate and wait for it to cure.

Through the above methods and precautions, TEP flame retardant can be used effectively to improve the flame retardant properties of materials. If a more environmentally friendly alternative is needed, other phosphate flame retardants (such as TCPP or TCEP) can be considered.
