How to use flame retardant TCEP

TCEP (Tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate) is a highly effective flame retardant, commonly used in polyurethane foam, plastics, resins and coatings. The following are the usage and precautions of TCEP:

Instructions for use:

  1. Addition ratio:
TCEP is usually added in an amount of 5%-15% of the total weight of the material, depending on the flame retardant requirements of the material and the application scenario.
For example, in polyurethane foam, the addition amount of TCEP is generally 10%-15%.
  2. Even mixing:
During the production process, TCEP is fully mixed with other raw materials to ensure uniform distribution.
A blender, high-speed mixer or other mixing equipment can be used.
  3. Processing temperature:
TCEP has a high decomposition temperature (about 200°C or more), but the temperature still needs to be controlled during processing to avoid decomposition or failure caused by excessive temperature.
It is recommended that the processing temperature be controlled below 180°C.
  4. Application areas:
Polyurethane foam: TCEP is often used for flame retardant treatment of soft and hard polyurethane foams.
Plastics: It can be used for flame retardant plastics such as PVC, PP, and PE.
Resins and coatings: Add to resins or coatings to improve their flame retardant properties.

Precautions:

  1. Safety protection:
TCEP is irritating to the skin and eyes. Protective gloves, masks and goggles should be worn when using it.
Avoid direct contact with the skin and inhalation of dust.
  2. Storage conditions:
TCEP should be stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, away from fire and high temperature.
    Avoid contact with strong oxidants.
  3. Environmental impact:
TCEP has a certain impact on the environment. When using and handling it, relevant environmental protection laws and regulations should be followed to avoid polluting the environment.
Waste should be handled in accordance with the hazardous chemical handling specifications.
  4. Compatibility test:
Before using TCEP, it is recommended to conduct a small-scale test to ensure its compatibility with the substrate and flame retardant effect.
  5. Regulatory compliance:
Different countries and regions have different regulatory requirements for the use of TCEP. For example, TCEP may be restricted or prohibited in some areas. Before use, you should understand and comply with relevant regulations.

Example Formulation (Polyurethane Foam):

  • Raw materials:
    Polyether polyol: 100 parts
    Isocyanate: 50 parts
    TCEP: 10-15 parts
    Catalyst: appropriate amount
    Foaming agent: appropriate amount
  • Steps:
Mix polyether polyol and TCEP evenly.
Add catalyst and foaming agent and continue stirring.
Add isocyanate, stir quickly and pour into the mold for foaming.
After the foam solidifies, take it out and proceed with subsequent treatment.

Through the above methods and precautions, TCEP flame retardant can be used effectively to improve the flame retardant properties of materials. If a more environmentally friendly alternative is needed, TCPP or other new flame retardants can be considered.
